Insurance coverage for leg vein treatments varies based upon both your insurance coverage and your veins. In many cases, we will contact your insurance company with letters, photos, phone calls and faxes to see if they can help cover the costs. Often they want to review your venous Doppler ultrasound results from our office and your medical history. Treatment that is deemed to be cosmetic is almost never covered.
If you have no insurance, or they won’t provide coverage for vein treatment costs, we give patients a discount in the fees, and assist with payment plans where possible.
We will help our patients as much as possible in terms of coverage, but we ask that patients understand that the final decision is up to their insurance company, not us.
Absolutely. A history and physical examination with focus on the leg veins will be done by either of the Shulman doctors. A detailed explanation of all treatment options will be presented to you, and we encourage you to ask any questions you might have.
At the Shulman Vein and Laser Center, all varicose and spider vein treatment is done personally by one of the two Dr. Shulmans. Unlike ‘vein clinics’, or hospital programs where students, nurses, interns, residents or others just starting to learn about vein therapy may be treating patients, all work is done by full time vein specialists with combined experience of over 55 years in the vein field. We will never allow any of our patients to be used for training or learning experience.
Dr. Martin L. Shulman M.D. was one of the first American physicians to become board certified in Vascular Surgery. Dr. Lee G. Shulman M.D. was in the first class of doctors to become certified as Diplomats in Phlebology, the diagnosis and treatment of vein disorders.
After filling out the preliminary paperwork, you will meet with one of the two doctors. A medical history and examination of the veins to be treated will be performed. In some cases, a Doppler ultrasound of the veins may be done to see which treatment might be most effective for you. A detailed review of vein treatment options will be discussed, and we encourage you to ask any questions you may still have.
For patients without insurance or who are paying out of pocket, treatment can be started and possibly even completed that first day. If there is a chance a patient’s insurance may cover or partially cover their vein therapy, we would reach out with letters, photos, etc, to the insurance company to verify ways they can assist.
All treatment is done in one of our three offices in Manhattan (Park Avenue), Manhasset, or Commack.
At the Shulman Vein and Laser Center, all work is done with patients awake. We use only local anesthesia in the area surrounding the veins to be treated in varicose vein laser treatments and micro-surgery (ambulatory phlebectomy) for certain veins. You will still be alert and encouraged to talk to us during the procedure. Injection compression sclerotherapy cases do not require anesthesia, as we use the smallest needles manufactured. Patients are often happily surprised at how pain free vein treatment can be.
Any ‘vein clinic’ or hospital that wants to use general anesthesia on you should be thoroughly questioned. Is this really being done for your benefit or so that you’re asleep and thus unable to tell which doctor or doctor-in-training is treating your veins?
After spider veins or varicose veins injection treatments, you are only asked not to get the legs wet while the cotton bandages we put on the legs are in place. This is for just a few hours.
After varicose vein laser treatments or micro-surgery (ambulatory phlebectomy), you will have ace bandage like wraps on the legs for a few days and are asked not to get them wet.
All patients are able to drive themselves home right after all treatments, even if we have treated your right leg or your hands.
This is a common situation at the Shulman Vein and Laser Center and we do all we can to accommodate you. Most vein therapy is done in the legs, but we also routinely treat veins in the hands, arms, face, temples, breast, chest, etc.
Some patients are eager to get started and finished with treatment, while some are visiting us from out of town for just a day or two. Either way, as long as it’s medically safe, we can and often do treat more than one area of veins at one office visit.
Treatment costs can vary based upon the specialist and facility. Confer with your physician to determine your best possible options. Be sure to consult with your insurance company to determine if your treatments options will be covered by your policy. Varicose vein treatment may sometimes be considered a cosmetic surgery, an elective procedure, while sometimes insurance will consider it medically necessary. If, however, your varicose veins lead to extreme swelling or bleeding, it can be considered a medical procedure and thus hopefully covered by insurance. Varicose veins are treated by many physicians, but vein specialists are known as phlebologists. The most common forms of treatment include injection treatment, micro surgery, and laser ablation. While the recovery time after vein therapy in our offices is very quick, although it will take time for the veins themselves to fully disappear. After laser ablation or micro surgery, patients wear compression type bandages on the legs for a few days but you are able to continue daily activities—climbing the stairs, walking and driving a car. After vein injection treatment, the bandages are small and are only left on the legs for up to 24 hours. While you can drive, walk and climb stairs, we suggest not exercising until the day after your procedure.
